Back to School, Back to Germs: Natural Ways to Support Your Family’s Wellness
Fresh backpacks. New teachers. Earlier bedtimes. Packed lunches, and approximately 847 new germs coming home in your child's backpack. Welcome back to school. As much as I love the excitement of a new school year, it also means our kids are suddenly back in classrooms, cafeterias, buses, sports, activities, and enclosed spaces with a whole lot of other people.
Then they come home to us.
Back-to-school season is one of my favorite times to get really intentional about the basics—not because I believe we need to live in fear of germs, but because our bodies are constantly working to keep us well.
And there are plenty of simple ways we can support them.
Start With Sleep—Seriously
Before we talk about a single herb or supplement, let's talk about sleep. If there's one thing I wish we'd stop overlooking in conversations about immune health, it's this. Sleep is when the body gets an opportunity to recover, regulate, repair, and prepare for another day. And after the freedom of summer, getting kids back onto a consistent schedule can be an adjustment. I like to begin moving bedtime earlier before school starts rather than expecting everyone's internal clock to magically cooperate on the first day. A calm nighttime routine, less stimulation before bed, a cool dark room, and consistent sleep and wake times can go a long way.
And this isn't just for kids. Parents need sleep, too. Your immune system doesn't care that lunches need packing.
Feed the Immune System
I don't believe wellness requires a perfectly curated diet, but I do believe food matters. Protein, colorful fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, fiber, and minimally processed foods provide nutrients the body needs to function normally, including the immune system. I especially focus on getting enough protein into meals and snacks because growing kids need it, and busy school schedules can make it surprisingly easy to fall short. Breakfast doesn't have to be elaborate. Lunch doesn't have to look Pinterest-perfect.
Think less about perfection and more about asking:
What can I add to this meal to make it a little more nourishing?
That mindset makes healthy eating much more realistic.
Hydration Is One of the Simplest Wellness Tools We Have
Kids get busy. They forget to drink. Then suddenly it's 4:00 PM and the water bottle you lovingly packed that morning is still almost full. Hydration supports digestion, circulation, temperature regulation, and normal bodily functions. Sending a reusable water bottle to school and encouraging kids to actually use it is one of the simplest habits we can establish.
And once again…parents, I'm looking at us too. Drink your water.
Let Them Get Outside
After sitting in a classroom all day, kids need to move. Walk. Ride bikes. Play in the yard. Practice sports. Go to the playground. Get dirty.
Movement supports circulation, sleep, mood, stress regulation, and overall health. Time outdoors also gives kids an opportunity to decompress after spending hours being asked to sit still, listen, learn, socialize, and regulate themselves. Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do after school isn't another structured activity.
It's opening the door and saying, go play.
You Don't Need to Fear Every Germ
This one might surprise people coming from a wellness brand. I don't believe our goal should be eliminating every microorganism our children encounter. Exposure to the world around us is part of life. Of course, basic hygiene matters. Wash hands after using the bathroom, before eating, after blowing noses, and when coming home from particularly germ-heavy environments.
But we don't need to sterilize childhood. Good hygiene and obsessive sanitizing are not the same thing. I want my kids to understand how to take care of themselves without becoming afraid of the world around them.
Where Herbs and Supplements Fit In
This is where Raw Awakening comes in. Supplements should be exactly that: Supplemental. They don't replace sleep, nutrition, movement, hydration, but thoughtfully chosen herbs and nutrients can become another tool in a family's wellness routine.
A few of my Raw Awakening favorites become especially relevant once school starts.
Mushroom Magick
Medicinal mushrooms are some of my favorite tools for the transition back into busy routines when we're thinking about immunity, focus, stress, and overall wellness together.
Super Shiitake
Shiitake isn't just a culinary mushroom. It contains naturally occurring beta-glucans and compounds such as lentinan that have been studied for their interactions with the immune system.
Rather than thinking of it as something that simply "boosts" immunity, I prefer to think about medicinal mushrooms as part of supporting normal, healthy immune function.
Immune Magick
Sometimes I want something formulated specifically with seasonal immune support in mind. That's where Immune Magick fits into my apothecary.
I especially love having herbal support available during seasons when exposure increases, such as back to school, travel, changing weather, holidays, and those weeks when it seems like everyone around you is coughing.
The goal isn't to promise you'll never get sick. It's to give your body foundational support while continuing all of the everyday habits that matter.
Mineral Magick
Minerals don't get nearly enough attention. Mineral Magick combines magnesium citrate, magnesium malate, and magnesium glycinate to support foundational wellness.
Magnesium participates in hundreds of processes throughout the body and plays roles in normal muscle and nerve function, energy metabolism, and many other physiological processes.
Back-to-school wellness isn't exclusively about the immune system. It's about supporting the entire body as routines, activity levels, sleep schedules, and stress levels change.
A Note About Kids and Supplements
Natural does not automatically mean appropriate for every age, every child, or every situation. Children aren't simply smaller adults. Dosage matters. Ingredients matter. Medical history matters. Medications matter.
If you're unsure whether a Raw Awakening product is appropriate for your family, ask me.
I'd much rather help you determine that something isn't necessary than have you purchase something simply because social media told you that you need it.
Don't Forget About the Parents
Back-to-school season isn't only an adjustment for children. Suddenly we're managing earlier mornings, lunches, homework, sports, activities, practices, forgotten water bottles, permission slips, transportation, and approximately 14 emails from the school before breakfast.
Your health matters too. Eat breakfast. Drink water. Move your body. Take your supplements. Get outside. Protect your sleep, and find five minutes somewhere in the chaos to regulate your own nervous system.
Taking care of yourself isn't separate from taking care of your family. It's part of it.
Back to Basics for Back to School
You don't need a cabinet overflowing with supplements, nd you definitely don't need a complicated wellness protocol that adds another twenty things to your already overflowing back-to-school checklist.
Start with the basics. That's what Raw Awakening has always been about. Not chasing perfect health. Not fearing our bodies.
Rather, learning how to understand them, nourish them, and give them the support they need to do what they're already beautifully designed to do.
Here's to a healthy, happy school year…and hopefully fewer calls from the school nurse.
